  • Royal Blue (K2EDTA or Na2EDTA) and Urine in a sterile container

Processing & Shipping

Specimen Processing:
Blood Cadmium: Collect blood sample in Royal Blue Top (EDTA), invert several times to mix blood. Specimen must be kept as whole blood in original container, do not separate. Store refrigerated and ship immediately to Core Lab. Urine: Collect 40 - 50mLs of random urine in a sterile urine collection container. --Beta-2-Microglobulin: From original urine collection, pour off an aliquot of urine into a transport tube. Adjust pH to 6.0-8.0 by adding 1M HCL or 5% NaOH, FREEZE ASAP (within 1 hour). --Urine for Creatinine: From original urine collection, pour off an aliquot into a transport tube, freeze. --Urine Cadmium: From original urine collection, pour off an aliquot of urine into a transport tube. Add 0.1mL of 12M HNO3, refrigerate.

Shipping Instructions:
Cadmium, Blood: Refrigerate. Cadmium, Urine: Refrigerate. Creatinine, Urine: Freeze. Beta-2 Microglobulin, Urine: Freeze.

Special Instructions:
To avoid contamination, collect samples at the beginning of work shift. Blood and urine should be collected the same day. Submit separate aliquots for each urine test.

Rejection Criteria:
Specimens other than blood or urine from appropriate containers. Ambient samples. Urine collected within 48 hours after administration of gadolinium (Gd) containing contrast media (may occur with MRI studies).
